The King’s Request
Years ago I heard Kenny Boles deliver a powerful message on unity in the Church. He took as one of his texts 2 Samuel 23:15. In this passage, David called out, “Oh that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” Boles observed that the mighty men answered the call of their king and risked life and limb to break through the Philistine lines to reach the well. They brought David his much wanted glass of water.
That is what we do when we hear the voice of the king. We surrender our will and do exactly what is asked of us.
What does Jesus the king ask of you? What is His message for you? It could be a whole variety of things:
- If you are offering a gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there at the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:23-24)
- Don’t pray to be seen by other people (Matthew 6:5)
- Put my words into practice (Matthew 7:24)
- The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few (Matthew 9:37)
- Anyone who gives a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple will certainly not lose his reward (Matthew 10:42)
- If you had know what these words mean ‘I desire mercy not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent (Matthew 12:7)
- I tell you not seven times, but seventy seven times (Matthew 18:22)
- So the last will be first and the first last (Matthew 20:16)
Whatever word that Jesus says to you – even if it is not comfortable for you – listen to your king. Serve him with the same diligence that the mighty men showed to David. Fulfill what Jesus asks of you with everything that you have.
