Feel the Nails

nails003-webOn Sunday we sang what I like to call “an old-new song.” Feel the Nails was written by Ray Boltz in 1989.  But many did not the know words (or at least didn’t at first).  Here they are

Can He still feel the Nails
Every time I fail -
Can He hear the crowd cry “Crucify Again?”

Am I causing Him pain
When I know I’ve got to change?
Cause I just can’t bear the thought of hurting Him.

Chorus
Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord
Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord

It’s an interesting song. I find that some really don’t like it.  They answer, “No! He doesn’t feel the nails!”

There is, however the passage in Hebrews 6:6 that discuses those who are “crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.”

Importantly, Jesus does not feel the physical pain of the cross as we sin.  That would be a rather morbid theology.  But his heart does ache, and I think the disgrace is real when those who have “tasted the heavenly gift” and “shared in the Holy Spirit” become wayward (again look at Hebrews 6:4).

We should be diligent and not simply drift along in our faith. To do so might bring shame to the holy name of Jesus.  If this song and melody can make its way into our heart, it might keep us from the kind of lazy disobedience that the writer of Hebrews is so concerned about.
