Tribute to a Friend

juanita's pictureIt is hard to believe that almost a year ago at this time that our dear sister Juanita Pixley went on to be with the Lord.  She was a dear friend and I do miss her.

One of my favorite Juanita memories is the audio track that she tied to the inbox on her computer.  Every time a new message appeared, a sassy woman’s voice would say, “GIRLFRIEND, you’ve got mail.”  You have to appreciate how many times a day we heard that little track.  All the church messages that came to her– each with its own girlfriend attachment.

Remember this weekend the power of laughter to heal the soul.

“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones” (Proverbs 15:30)

What is your favorite Juanita story/moment?

Juanita and I were on the same jury panel for a gruesome murder trial. Juanita and another member were picked for the jury. She and I could not discuss the case while the trial was ongoing, but she promised to tell me everything afterwards. I went by the church office that Thursday specificaly to talk to her, and we had a long discussion of the trial. When I left, she called out “Bye Barry, see you later”. The next morning she left us. I am so glad I got to talk to her that last time.

Thank you for posting this, Jason. She WAS a great friend and boy did she make the office a FUN place to be. I loved going on a road trip with her to San Angelo to hear Ray VanDerLaan speak. Not only was the road trip a blast, we thoroughly enjoyed hearing RVL, and there were several wonderful times of praise and worship. It was so great to be standing next to Juanita with her little hands lifted in praise. She LOVED our heavenly Father and how encouraging it was to be around her. She was just so REAL all the time. I sure do miss her. Thank you for this tribute.

There are so many! I loved her sense of humor, and I loved how she truly made everyone feel like they were her best friend. I loved the humorous wise sayings she came up with that always caught me off guard. :) I still think she knows how to “go out with a bang” because she always said, “Now at my funeral, just say a few words and everybody go eat some fried chicken!” and we did!

Thanks for these thoughts, Jason. So true.
